FAQ about our Exams

  • 1. When does the next exam take place?

    Please find information about our External exams dates here. Registration dates for exams at the Goethe-Zentrum Kathmandu are announced on our Facebook and Instagram pages.

     

    If you’re currently studying at the Goethe-Zentrum Kathmandu, your Internal exam will be after full completion of the course.

    Goethe-Zentrum Kathmandu offers External exams for all applicants (GZK & non-GZK students) on the levels A1, A2, B1, B2 and C1. These exams are held on 3 Sundays per month.

  • 2. How much are the exam fees?

  • 3. Do I have to pay my fee in Euro?

    No! All exams fees are to be paid in Nepalese currency! The final price in Nepalese currency will be calculated in accordance with the respective exchange rate of the European Commission (E.C.) at the time the registration starts. Please find the respective currency converter here

  • 4. Internal exams? External exams? What is the difference?

    Students who are currently studying at the Goethe-Zentrum Kathmandu are the only ones allowed to register in the Internal exams. Internal exams are conducted only after full completion of a course.

    It is necessary to pass the Internal exam in order to advance to the next level.

     

    External exams are for all applicants (GZK & non-GZK students) of the level A1, A2, B1, B2 and C1. These exams are held on three Sundays of every month. Registration for External exams are announced on GZK’s Facebook and Instagram pages.

  • 5. I have to submit my exam form but I will not be able to visit the GZK. What should I do?

    It is highly preferred if the examinee visits the GZK to fill the exam form and submit required documents.

     

    If you are not able to visit the GZK to submit the exam forms and other required documents, you can send them via courier. The exam registration form can be found here.

    Please inform the GZK reception via call or email that you are about to send your courier. We will call you when your documents has arrived at the GZK.

     

    NOTE: The credentials in the exam form must be filled and signed by the examinee. Exam form filled and signed by anyone other than the examinee will not be accepted.

  • 6. How can I register for an exam?

    For A1 and A2 exams, registrations are usually physical. Opening of A1 and A2 exam registrations are announced on GZK’s Facebook and Instagram pages, where the day of registration is also mentioned.

    Interested applicants must be present at the GZK on the mentioned registration date where the exam form will be distributed on “first come, first serve” basis.

     

    For B1 and B2 exams, registrations will be online. The online form is exclusively published on GZK’s Facebook page. Registration dates are announced on GZK’s Facebook and Instagram pages.

    After submitting the online form, the applicants are assigned one exam date on “first come, first serve” basis. If any more applicants remain, they will be kept in the waiting list and will be assigned next nearest exam date on “first come, first serve” basis as well.

    Next B1 and B2 exam registration will open only when all of the applicants who have submitted the online form have been assigned an exam date.

  • 7. Why does the registration opens and closes so quickly?

    It is simply because of very high demand for German language in Nepal.

     

    At the Goethe-Zentrum Kathmandu, seats for exams are very limited. Registrations are to be made while considering the limited seats.

    The registrations are closed promptly in order to keep the waiting list as short as possible and for new registrations to be opened more frequently.

  • 8. Do I need to present any certificates or academic qualifications to register for an exam?

    No. You do not need any prior certificates or academic qualifications to register for an External exams at the Goethe-Zentrum Kathmandu.

     

    However, this case may differ for Internal exams. Please check #4 of the FAQ for more information.

  • 9. How many students can register for an exam?

    At the moment, the Goethe-Zenturm Kathmandu has the capacity of maximum 70 applicants for exams of all levels.

  • 10. I have successfully submitted the online form for exams. What is the next process?

    When you have been assigned an exam date, we will send you an email within 36 hours of submitting the form. The email will mention the day you have to visit the GZK to fill the exam form and to submit required documents. If you are not able to visit the GZK to register for an exam on the mentioned date, please inform the GZK reception via calls or emails. If you fail to visit the GZK without prior information, your registration will be cancelled and your seat will be assigned to the applicants in the waiting list.

     

    The exam dates are assigned on “first come, first serve” basis i.e. whoever submits the form earliest will be assigned the latest exam date. Remaining applicants are kept in the waiting list and will be assigned next nearest exam dates.

     

    If you do not receive any emails within 36 hours of submitting the form, that means you are being kept in the waiting list and will be assigned the next nearest exam date.

    We advise you to check your emails at least once per day. Please make sure to check your Inbox and Spam folder.

  • 11. I want to prepare for my exam. Where can I find exam preparation materials?

  • 12. I have successfully registered for an exam. Can I give my seat to someone else?

    No. Exam seats are not transferable in any case due to official regulations.

  • 13. What should I bring on the day of my exam?

    On the day of the exam at the Goethe-Zentrum Kathmandu it is absolutely MANDATORY for examinees to present their ORIGINAL Citizenship or Passport or National ID which includes a clear photograph of themselves.

     

    The ID has to be presented before the beginning of the exam and/or at any other point as necessary or on demand. Please note that Driving Licenses, photocopies, digital copies of IDs WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!

     

    NOTE: If your original citizenship/passport/national ID are at the German Embassy, please inform the Embassy in advance via email. The Embassy will return your IDs upon request.

  • 14. I have just taken my exam and am waiting for the results. When can I expect the results?

    The Goethe-Zentrum Kathmandu strives to provide you with the results of you exams in a timely manner. Results will usually be published at the premises of the GZK as follows:

     

    A1 & A2       Up to 20 working days

     

    B1 & B2       Up to 30 working days

     

    C1                Up to 30 working days

     

    The results will be published on the public pinboards on the premises of the GZK. The GZK will inform about the publication of the results via posts on its Facebook and Instagram pages.

     

    NOTE: Due to the high demand the time periods stated here may vary. Please follows our Social Media channels for more information or contact our reception.

  • 15. The results are out, how can i check my results? Will the GZK provide my results through calls or messages?

    The results cannot be relayed through calls and messages in any circumstances because it is against Goethe Instiut’s policy.

    To check your results, you’ll have to visit GZK. The publication of the results will be announced through GZK’s Facebook and Instagram pages. The marks sheet will be posted on GZK’s public notice board. The exam certificates will be issued and can be collected only by its owner at the reception desk only after presenting thier ORIGINAL citizenship/passport/national ID.

  • 16. Can somebody else collect my exam certificates on my behalf?

    Yes, but it is highly preferred if the owner of the certificate collects it.
    If you cannot visit GZK to collect your certificate, you have to write an application at reception@goethe-kathmandu.edu.np . The application must include:
    1. the reason you were not able to visit to collect your certificate.
    2. your PTN number, phone number, exam date.
    3. picture of your citizenship/passport/national ID.
    4. name and picture of citizenship/passport/national ID of the individual who’ll be collecting your certificate on your behalf.

     

    NOTE: The individual who’ll be collecting your certificate on your behalf must present their ORIGINAL citizenship/passport/national ID at the reception desk. Their details must match as on the application you have provided.

  • 17. I failed my exam. Can I retake the exam? How many times?

    Yes! You can retake the exam or exam of any module as often as it might become necessary.

    Please also see our section about exam preparations.

  • 18. Can I take my exam online?

    No! At the time, all official exams at the Goethe-Zentrum Kathmandu are physical.

     

    Please be aware that any such offer in the internet does have no or limited validity with respective authorities in Germany!

  • 19. How can I keep up with all the latest information and schedules of exams?

    Registration dates for all External exams are announced on GZK’s Facebook and Instagram pages.

  • 20. For how long is my German Language Certificate valid?

    Your certificate is valid indefinitely! However, most institutions, authorities and/or universities regulate their own requirements. Please consult the respective institution for further information!

     

    At the Goethe-Zentrum Kathmandu, for class registrations, exam certificates are valid until 12 months from the exam date. If your certificates are older than 12 months, then you have to take a placement test.

  • 21. My details on my exam certificate are not correct. Can it be changed or re-printed?

    If you have inform the GZK reception before the results of your exam has been published, only then your details can be altered.

     

    Once your certificate has been printed, it cannot be re-printed again.

     

    If you have reasonable doubt that you had incorrectly entered your details in the exam form, please bring your original exam certificate at the GZK reception. Your exam form will be checked, if you had made the mistake, your certificate will not be re-printed.

    If the mistake was from GZK’s side, we will let you know whether or not your certificate can be altered.

  • 22. I passed my exam. I am ready. Does the Goethe-Zentrum help me to apply for a job or study in Germany?

    Unfortunately, that is where our services end. We, the Goethe-Zentrum Kathmandu are solely a German language institute, a cultural and exam centre. We do not offer counselling services and aide in applying for Germany.

     

    However, counselling seminars on studying in Germany are occasionally conducted at the GZK by other parties. Such seminars are announced on GZK’s Facebook and Instagram pages.

  • 23. I studied at the GZK but failed my Internal exam. Can I re-register for another exam as GZK-Student?

    Once you have failed an Internal exam your are considered a ‘non-GZK-student’.

    However, you can re-apply for another exam at any exam date provided for non-GZK-students.

     

    NOTE: You will receive the discount for GZK-students for one additional attempt in case your next exam will take place in the course of the next 12 months after the first attempt. Such discount is only valid for an exam at the same level as the failed exam! After that any other attempt has to be paid in full.

  • 24. I failed my exam but I need a certificate of participation with my score. What do I do?

    If you failed your exam you are eligible to obtain a certificate of participation stating you overall score.

     

    Please inform the GZK reception for the participation certificate. The certificates denotes the marks you have obtained on your exam.

  • 25. I failed my exam but I have reasonable doubt that the result is accurate. What should I do??

    You have the right to have your exam re-evaluated. In such cases please contact the GZK reception by emailing an application for your exam results to be re-evaluated.

     

    NOTE: If you have failed your exam that does not automatically mean that your exam needs to be re-evaluated. Please make sure there is reasonable doubt for such request.

  • 26. I lost my exam certificate? What can I do?

    In case an examinee loses their exam certificate they can request the issuance of a substitute certificate at their own cost. Please inform the GZK reception about substitute certificate.

     

    The cost of a substitute certificate is: 1,000/- NPR

  • 27. I am deaf or have similar special needs. What can be done?

  • 28. I study at the Goethe-Zentrum Kathmandu. Do I have a guaranteed exam seat?

    As GZK Student you have one guaranteed Internal exam only after full completion of the course of the same level.

     

    The case varies for B2.1 and B2.2 level. Please check #29 of the FAQ.

  • 29. I am currently studying in a B2.1 class. Do i have a guaranteed B2 internal exam seat after completing B2.1?

    No! Students who are currently studying B2.1 do not get to register for the B2 internal exam. They will be able to do so only after completing B2.2.

    The B2 internal exam is solely for the current B2.2 students. If any exam slots become vacant, they will be assigned to external applicants or applicants in the waiting list.

     

    However, if you are a current B2.1 student at the GZK, you can register for the B2 external exams. You’ll have to fill the online registration form and you’ll receive an email from us when you have been assigned an exam date.
