Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

These descriptors are skill levels according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and are used by language learners to measure their competence, skills and ability at speaking, reading, writing and understanding the language. The Framework also provides a common basis for the development of curricula, textbooks and qualification certificates in European language work and enables interlingual comparability.

On this page, you will find statements related to different skill sets, which are helpful in assessing your own language level and thereby finding the right course for you. According to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, the language level is divided into six levels from A1 (beginner) to C2 (expert). Similarly, German courses at the GZK are divided by these levels. Respective CEFR exams are available to those who want to make their level official, i.e. for school admissions, university course requirements, employment / au pair as well as family reunions, among others.

Terms and Conditions

1. General Requirements

Participants must be at least 17 years of age to be able to book and attend a language class at the Goethe-Zentrum Kathmandu (hereinafter GZK). Proof of age shall be produced at the time of registration. In case a participant is less than 17 years of age at time of registration he|she and his|her legal guardian shall seek the counsel of the administration of the GZK.

2. Registration & Placement

2.1. Registration takes place via the website of the GZK [www.goethe- kathmandu.edu.np] or at the reception of the GZK during business hours.

2.2. The GZK reserves the right to conduct a placement test if the participant can produce previous knowledge or a language certificate that was not acquired during classes of or issued by the GZK. The same is valid if a certificate is older than 8 months.

3. Fees

3.1. The contractually binding course fee complies with the current price list at the time of registration. The list can be consulted via the website of the GZK or at the reception of the GZK during business hours.

3.2. Cost for books, CDs and further course material are NOT included in the course fee unless said otherwise.

3.3. Fees for exams are NOT included in the course fee.

3.4. Any bank fees that shall arise in the course of course-fee-payment are to be borne by the participant.

4. Terms of Payment

4.1. The course fee is due in full at the time of registration and may be paid via bank transfer, cash or mobile money service like eSewa.

4.2. If payment is not received in full by the GZK by the time the course starts the participant loses the right to take part in the course.

4.3. Payment in installments is not possible.

5. Cancellation

5.1. Each participant has the right to withdraw from or cancel a course without providing reasons under the following circumstances:

1. In case of a cancelation till the day the course starts the GZK charges a cancelation fee of 10% of the general course fee.
2. In case of a cancelation during the course, that is from its first day onwards, the GZK charges a cancelation fee of 100 % of the general course fee.

5.2. Any cancelation has to be made in writing. For a valid cancelation the GZK must receive the written cancelation via mail or at the reception of the GZK at the respective deadline.

5.3. In case of sickness or similar circumstances that the participant is not culpable for, an extraordinary cancelation of a course is possible. Such cancelation has to be made in writing. The participant has to explain his or her reason in detail. If confirmed and approved by the GZK the participant receives a refund of the complete course fee – minus an administrative fee of 10% of the course fee.

5.4. The GZK reserves the right to cancel a course if the minimum number of participants is not reached. In this case the participant receives a refund of any fees the participant might have already paid.

6. Exams

6.1. At the end of each level | course each participant has to take an official exam. Registration for such an exam has to be conducted separately and is not included in the registration for a course.

6.2. The contractually binding fee is stated in the price list at the time of registration. The list can be consulted at the reception of the GZK during business hours or at the website of the Goethe-Zentrum Kathmandu.

6.3. If payment is not received in full by the GZK at the respective given deadline the participant loses the right to take part in the exam. The payment deadline will be given by the GZK at the time of registration.

6.4. If a participant is not able to take part in the exam on short notice due to sickness or any other genuine reason, he | she receives the one-time opportunity to re- enrol in an exam at the next possible date. In such case the participant has to provide a medical certificate /related document confirming his | her inability to take part in the scheduled exam. If such a certificate can’t be produced the GZK charges a cancelation fee of 100 % of the exam fee.

7. Attendance and Cancellation of Classes

7.1. Provided the participant attends class in no less than 70% of all lessons he | she will obtain a certificate of participation by the GZK. Though issued by the GZK, such a certificate is not suitable to serve as a language certificate towards German authorities or universities.

7.2. In case a class has to be suspended on short notice due to the unavailability of the teacher the GZK strives to offer a suitable surrogate-date as soon as possible.

8. Online – Courses

8.1. It is the obligation of each participant to ensure the availability of the necessary equipment and technical conditions. The GZK will provide respective recommendations prior to each course.

8.2. The general terms of payment are valid following number 4. of these general terms of business.

8.3. Participants who have booked an online course or already take part in such a course are not entitled to change into an analogue course organized by the GZK.

8.4. Each participant has the opportunity to receive a certificate of participation if she attends no less than 70% of the offered online live session and completes 70% of the given tasks and homework. Issued by the GZK, such a certificate is not suitable to serve as a language certificate towards German authorities or universities.

9. Liability

9.1. The liability of the Goethe-Zentrum Kathmandu is limited to premeditation and negligence.

9.2. The GZK can’t be held liable for the complete or partly cancellation of courses due to force majeure such like – among others – a pandemia, fire, war, a natural disaster, governmental rules, decrees and orders etc. or any other reasons that lie beyond the control or sphere of influence of both parties.

10. Validity

10.1. The version currently published on the website of the Goethe-Zentrum Kathmandu | www.goethe-kathmandu.edu.np | is the currently effective version. The currently valid version replaces any earlier version.
